THE LONELIEST WHALE

Today, Bleecker Street announced that Joshua Zeman’s documentary, THE LONELIEST WHALE, will be released in theatres on July 9, 2021. The film was Produced by Zeman and Jonathan Shukat, Co-Produced by Caitlin Colford, and Executive Produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Davisson, Lucy Sumner, Adrian Grenier, Brian Devin and Evan Krauss.

Five years in the making, THE LONELIEST WHALE is a cinematic quest to find the “52 Hertz Whale,” which scientists believe has spent its entire life in solitude, calling out at a frequency different from any other whale. As the film embarks on this engrossing journey, audiences will explore what this whale’s lonely plight can teach us—not just about our changing relationship to the ocean, but to each other.

It was the story of the 52 Hertz Whale that inspired Adrian Grenier and Lucy Sumner to launch Lonely Whale in 2015, and it is still our mission to reconcile the loneliness, isolation, and disconnect in society that allows humans to exploit and damage our ocean. So many of us relate to the The 52 Hertz Whale because at some point in our lives, we’ve all felt lonely, misunderstood, and isolated.

As the world faces a continuing pandemic, urgent environmental catastrophes, and increasing political divides, we’re more committed than ever to work toward healing and deepening our relationship with ourselves, each other and the ocean. We hope you will join us on our own journey as we find and strengthen community with each other and create change not in spite of, but with, our unique voices. This film reminds us all that no one is ever truly alone… not even the 52 Hertz Whale.
